ESTADO DE CONSERVACIÓN DEL TAPIR DE MONTAÑA (Tapirus pinchaque) EN LA VERTIENTE ORIENTAL DE LOS ANDES DEL ECUADOR

During the last decades some anecdotic information on the ocurrence of mountain tapirs in the Central Andes was provided by local people of the sorrounding area of Tungurahua Volcano in Ecuador. For two months ago a group of researchers and local people from Baños town reported formaly about new registers of a mountain tapir population in the eastern flanks of the Tungurahua Volcano, in the Central Andes of Ecuador. Since this report a group of TSG researchers, environmental authorities and local people decide to visit the zone and evaluate the existence of a healthy mountain tapir population. The results of this short trip were amazing...: Feces, hair and track evidence of at least five individuals corroborated with the direct observation of four mountain tapirs in its natural habitat in just four days in the field!!!.
